Weekly Updates 11/5/17

Weekly Update 11/5/17

Happy Daylight Savings! I hope everyone tried to enjoy an extra hour of sleep last night. We can also enjoy a 4 day week this week. Reminder that the last day of the quarter is Thursday.
Our Chorus quiz will be tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday (depending on what day your child has chorus). More details in the Chorus section. Lunch chorus is not taking the quiz.

NYSSMA: NYSSMA letters will be going out next month. As soon as the letter goes out, you can begin registering students for NYSSMA. They usually go out in late December/January. If your child is interested in NYSSMA, let me know!

For those new to emails…. welcome to my “Weekly Updates”! This is where the most important information can be found for Chorus, Chorale, and Spotlight. It’s very important you read the parts of this email that pertain to your child’s performing group, as they may not be involved in everything.

Reminder: If students lose their music or workbooks, they can print them out from my website under “Print at Home” or “Chorus” links.

The website: Please try to find answers to frequently asked questions on my website. I have sections for NYSSMA, All-County, Spotlight, Chorale, Chorus, as well as calendars, sign-ups, printables, and more. This is a key resource for you this year.

The following are updates for Chorus, Chorale, and Spotlight. For those of you new to Weekly Updates, you can find previous newsletters on my website: www.roslynmschorus.org. If you would like to unsubscribe to these emails, please respond to this email with: “UNSUBSCRIBE”. You are automatically subscribed if you send an email regarding Chorus, Chorale, or Spotlight.

If you ever have any questions, concerns, comments, or just want to chat, never hesitate to call, email, or use the “Remind” app.

Warmest Regards,

2. Thank you to Macie’s mom who has graciously offered to lend us some amazing props! I have added a “Prop” list to the website under the Spotlight tab. Anything in blue is something we need! If you have any of the items, please let me know, and I will mark it off. We need to know ASAP we do have in-house so we know what we need to purchase and borrow from the HS. Thank you!

3. Students should bring a pencil, their script, water, snacks, and homework to each rehearsal. No phones are allowed while rehearsing.

4. We are going to be adding bios in the program. These are due via EMAIL ONLY no later than December 1st. Students are limited to 150 words and can include past performances, performing groups, and message to the cast…I only have one so far!

5. I’m attaching the playbill ad letters, order form, and one-liner page to this email. You can also find all these forms here: https://roslynmschorus.org/printable-forms/

6. The FULL calendar is on my website on the homepage if you scroll down, as well as under the Spotlight tab.

7. We need RCP students to help with our show! If you have older siblings that would like to help, please send them my way! We also need parents who would like to help with costumes, lighting, sound, etc. Please email us ASAP or Friends of Spotlight!

8. Students interested in backstage should please contact either me or Ari Kohl, our student stage manger (8th grade).

**CHORALE (7th/8th grade select chorus)
1. The new Chorale schedule this year will Mondays and Wednesdays with sectionals on Fridays. You will not need to attend every Friday. This week the schedule is:
Monday- NONE/ Wednesday- EVERYONE/ Friday- NONE

2. JETS IMPORTANT INFO!…I’m sorry this has taken so long, but it’s taken FOREVER for the person I’ve been communicating with to get all of this to me.
– Wednesday your child will be receiving a permission slip for the trip
– We are leaving at 8am on December 3rd and coming back approximately at 6pm. We are taking a coach bus provided by the district
– Once we get to the stadium, students will be given lunch by the JETS, and will have a sound check around 10am
– Students will be sitting on the field during the game
– We have 8 teacher chaperones, unfortunately no parents can come as chaperones
– Your child will be receiving an individual code this week for group ticket sales, so that all your family’s seats can be together
– SO EXCITING: The Jets have offered to give us a percentage of our ticket sales as a fundraiser, so the more tickets we sell, the more money we make
3. Please check the Chorale calendar on my website regularly, as I update it all the time. You can even add that google calendar to your own by pressing “ADD CALENDAR” at the bottom of the calendar.

4. We will be adding a performance at the end of the year for 8th graders to welcome the new 6th grade members into Chorale. This will be a farewell performance with solos, duets, trios, etc. from any genre. We will also include songs that Chorale sang throughout the year with the 7th graders. More to come!

5. We have been accepted to sing at Lincoln Center, as mentioned at the beginning of the year. More to come on this, the performance would be March 18th.

6. As I mentioned last week, our concert has been moved from December 5th to December 13th.

December 5th- 6th grade, 7pm, at the HS, Students arrive at 6:30pm
December 11th- 7th/8th grade, 7pm, at the HS, students arrive at 6:30pm

2. We will have a written, end of the quarter, open book quiz on the worksheets in their workbooks this week, either Monday or Tuesday, depending on when your child has chorus. If students receive accommodations, of course they will receive these this week. Students have the answers to all questions that could be asked at the back of their workbooks. Students may bring a one 8.5x 11 double-sided piece of paper with as much information as they can fit.

QUIZ INFORMATION:
November 6th or 7th, depending on what day they have chorus. There will be 10 questions from any one of the pages listed below (all 10 questions will be taken from the same worksheet).

For extra-credit students can complete the entire workbook for a quiz grade. I drop the lowest quiz grade, so that can replace a low written quiz grade. The quiz will be about 10 minutes. The questions will be from ONE page of the workbook and the questions will be out of order on the page.

Students may bring a ONE 8.5×11 doubled sided or 2-single sided “Cheat Sheet” with as much information as possible. Therefore the quiz will be open book. Students should write key information, not everything on each sheet. Many of the questions are straight-forward and logical. Prioritize the information you are unfamiliar with.

The following pages are the ones that could be on the quiz:
Riser Rules
Rehearsal Decorum
Reading Choral Octavo
Why Vocal Warm-ups
Music Basics Worksheet
Chorus is a Performance Class
Singing Success
Breath Support
Dynamics
Music Notation
Music Road Signs

3. We will be voting on the pieces we are singing in the concert this week.

4. The end of the quarter, OPTIONAL, “Do’s and Don’t’s Video” is due on Thursday.

5. Reminder to make sure you start thinking ahead for concert attire. Formal black bottoms, white blank tops, and black shoes are required for concerts.

6. All solo auditions will be in two weeks, depending on what songs will be selected for the concert. More to come on the next update.

Have a great week!

All the best,
Mrs. Feinman
