Dear Musical Families,

This week flew by! We have a lot of updates this week, so please take the time to read through everything.
If your child signed up for NYSSMA, they can schedule an appointment with me during extra-help to work on their solos. I will be hosting a NYSSMA meeting Wednesday, February 15th at 2:45pm that will last about 30 minutes to discuss procedures for NYSSMA and answer any questions you may have.
For those of you new to emails, you can find all previous newsletters on the website:www.roslynmschorus.org/newsletters.

The following are updates for Spotlight, Chorale, and Chorus.
Sincerely,
Cyndi Feinman

CHORUS

1. We have a chorus quiz the first week of February (change in date!!) that includes step/skip solfege and all staff letter names (bass AND treble). We are practicing each day at the beginning of each class. I’m also collecting, grading, and handing back all classwork to make sure each and every student is getting individualized feedback. LUNCH CHORUS does not take this quiz.

2. I encourage students to bring their own folders to class. I have bins for each class, and many students make notes on their music and are getting frustrated that they share folders in class. Please ask your child if they prefer their own folder, and if so, know that I have storage place in class for them.

3. Please consider donating pencils to our pencil jar in the classroom! Ask your child for more details.

4. You can find all handouts, current repertoire, and online practice on my website under “chorus”: http://www.roslynmschorus.org/chorus.www.roslynmschorus.org/chorus.

5. I have been handing back “Do Now’s” with corrections on them so students can study for their quiz. Please make sure these papers are not thrown out. Ask for them when they come home. LUNCH CHORUS DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME HANDOUTS.

6. Ask students about “clicks”, a new addition to chorus classes!

Dear Musical Families,

I hope everyone had an easy first FULL week back. I know things were crazy with All-County, rehearsals, and getting things settled in the new year. Thank you for all getting your NYSSMA forms in this week. For those of you new to emails, you can find all previous newsletters on the website: www.roslynmschorus.org/newsletters.
The OUTSIDE summer chorus opportunity in Albany for the MS Honor Chorus, American Choral Directors Association is August 12th and 13th. This opportunity is NOT through the school, but I would like to share it with you. The fee is $125 plus hotel and meals for Friday and Saturday. For those of you who missed the description, here it is below, copied and pasted:

I have accepted an extra-curricular position as Co-Chair of the American Choral Director’s Association, NY Division for Middle School Age Children. I am facilitating and adjudicating auditions for the NYSSMA Summer Conference Honor Choir in Albany, 2017. Parents must chaperone their own child. Students rehearse for two days and then perform in a concert. Andrea Ramsey is conducting, a fabulous children’s conductor. Because I am one of the judges, students can audition directly with me at school, rather than submitting a recording online. This is a great opportunity for our students! Again, please let me know if you are interested.

If your child signed up for NYSSMA, they can schedule an appointment with me during extra-help to work on their solos. I will be hosting a NYSSMA meeting in February for parents to answer any questions you may have.

I look forward to having Monday off. Please enjoy the three day weekend! The following are updates for Spotlight, Chorale, and Chorus.

1. We have a chorus quiz the last week of January that includes step/skip solfege and all staff letter names (bass AND treble). We are practicing each day at the beginning of each class. I’m also collecting, grading, and handing back all classwork to make sure each and every student is getting individualized feedback. LUNCH CHORUS does not take this quiz.

Please ask your child if they prefer their own folder, and if so, know that I have storage place in class for them.
3. Many students are leaving with my pencils! Please remind your child that if they borrow a pencil to put it back 🙂
4. You can find all handouts, current repertoire, and online practice on my website under “chorus”: http://www.roslynmschorus.org/chorus.www.roslynmschorus.org/chorus.
Have a great weekend!

Happy New Year! I’m so happy to be back and this week has been a very smooth transition into 2017. We have a lot to look forward to. I hope everyone has a restful weekend. Below are the Weekly Updates for Chorale, Chorus, and Spotlight.

Chorus

1. 8th graders should start thinking about choreography for “My Shot” and practice rap portion

2. For 6th grade, I am changing the song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” to “Don’t Stop Believing”

3. 6th grade- I have also added the song “Touch the Sky”

4. Students should practice solfege from class handout, quiz will be the last week of January. More details to follow.

5. Please be sure to ask your child about “clicks”, a fun, new addition to chorus class.

6. Thanks to some parents who have done some research, I have just learned that the fee for the Carnegie Hall performance is $2000! I had no idea since it was not listed. If you still want to me to nominate your child, please let me know!

12/23

Good morning,
I have decided to consolidate all my weekly updates into one email, and you can just read the sections that apply to you and your child. This will eliminate a few emails since many of you are signed up for all three updates. I wish everyone a happy holiday, safe travels if you are traveling, and a happy new year!!
Just a note to everyone:
The Carnegie Hall Honor Choir auditions are recorded auditions. I do not do anything except nominate any child who wants to pursue the auditions. These auditions are highly competitive! I am also not sure of total cost since it is not listed on the website. This is an EXTERNAL audition, so the only thing I can do is nominate your child. I do not have any details except those listed on the website: http://honorsperformance.org/middle-school-honors-performance/. Also, it states the initial rounds of auditions is over. That is true, but they are still accepting nominations. I have received several emails from those of you who would like me to nominate your child, and I will do so. In order to audition, your child must sing a NYSSMA-like solo, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a song from the manual. Don’t worry about levels or anything like that. Simply record a song (can be on your phone) and apply. Good luck!
The summer choir is open to any child who wants to participate. The exact dates, as stated in my last email, are August 12th and 13th in Albany. You have the option of arriving on the 11th. In order to participate, students simply need to tell me they want me to nominate them. If I nominate them, they are in! Our students have the advantage over other students who have to go through an audition process. Again, many of you have expressed interest in this as well. I will send hard copies of information in 2017!
Warmest Regards,
Cyndi Feinman

Dear Chorus Family,
1) All the concerts this week were a success! Congratulations to our 6th graders who have now experienced their first middle school concert!

*I will work with your child during extra help in February, March, and April on their solos by appointment.
